'Be an Agent for Change'
Bethlehem’s celebration of the World Fair Trade Day 2016
14 May 2016
Place: will be announced soon
Mark your calendar! You are all invited to come and join us celebrate the Palestinian handicraft on World fair trade day. On the 14th of May 2016, Bethlehem Fair Trade Artisans (BFTA) is organizing an event in Bethlehem to raise Palestinian’s awareness on Fair Trade and to bring more producers on board. Fair trade is a social movement whose stated goal is to help producers in developing countries achieve better trading conditions and to promote sustainability. We the members of the movement advocates the rights and the fair payment of producers, as well as improved social and environmental standards, and empowering the most vulnerable.
World Fair Trade Day is an important day for World Fair Trade Organization and its members. It is the day when BFTA tells the Palestinians and Holy Land visitors how to be part of fair trade movement, and to celebrate what we have achieved though fair trade as an agent for change. BFTA is constructing the event with a special focus on women producers and their magnificent handicraft. Women producers in Palestine are one of the most vulnerable groups in the economy and they face many challenges imposed by the social norms. However, despite these challenges, women producers in Palestine showed tremendous resilience and constantly proved that they are as creative and talented, and they managed to get their message heard. But they still face many obstacles and they only comprise 2.5% of the exported Palestinian products. Since its foundation in 2009, BFTA through its global channels of fair trade has been providing women producers in Palestine with the agency to sell and market their products. BFTA was successful in approaching women producers and they managed to sell their handicraft all over the globe.
Now it is time to celebrate the beautiful handicrafts of Palestinian women, we at Bethlehem Fair Trade Artisans are organizing an event on the 14th of May to share the stories behind the making of handicrafts. We are offering you a chance to meet the women and to experience their work. The products involves: ceramics, embroidery, recycled glass, basket weaving, jewelry, and olive wood. But this is only part of the celebration, more activities and surprises are waiting for you in Bethlehem. We promise you a unique experience that you will always remember. Come and join us, you are all welcome.]]>
