George Ghareeb

After working at a Mother of Pearl workshop for several years, George Ghareeb decided to start his own workshop in 1986. His work mainly includes handmade ornaments and Christmas decorations. George is a very talented artisan from the City of the Shepherds (Beit Sahour) and a Christian family. He has suffered from health problems and is still in severe medical condition. He was first diagnosed with throat cancer and had to make his operations abroad, due to the lack of medical facilities in Palestine and not being able to be treated in Israel due to the high costs and lack of permits. He recovered from cancer, but later had failure in his kidneys. His brother donated his kidney for him. But ever since then, he has suffered from instability in his health status overall, which has caused him to not be able to work in his workshop very often. Since he had no workers, his two sons, who are well-acquainted with their father’s work as they used to dedicate their summers working alongside with him, decided to step in and take over their father’s business. They needed to help their father and take over his business in order to be able to support their family, and are happily doing so. They had only received their high school diploma when they decided to take over the family business allowing the tradition live on. Hand-in-hand they strive to support their family and bring in an income for the household. Such stories as this one are very inspiring and touching and need all the support they can get.
