George Qassis

George established his workshop in 1982, the good old days as he describes them, and was selling his handmade products in Jerusalem, reaching incoming tourists with no boundaries hindering his success. In 1994 all that changed due to the checkpoints and closings of main roads. Palestinians were prohibited to enter Jerusalem, which literally closed the only door Palestinians have to the outside world. The tourism sector faced a major drop off in the number of visitors and for a very long time tourism hit rock bottom and so did George and other producers. By that time George was struggling to find even a penny to support his family. George’s brave wife supported him through the crises and his two kids learned to be independent at a very young age in order to stand by their dad, as the Qassis family had to start again from scratch. His products are now sold worldwide due to the help of BFTA and of course George’s persistence to succeed. George is very thankful for the life he is has right now and wishes for his story to be told everywhere as it speaks for many other craftsmen. He is also very thankful for the support he gets from BFTA’s customers. Beit Sahour – Palestine
