Nidal Dakarrat

Nidal’s father established their family workshop in 1970 he carved and sold olivewood crosses, at that time Nidal was just a young child who was very smart at school. After a short while nidal’s father who had suffered his whole life died from cancer complications. Nidal started helping at the workshop at the age of 12, he worked along with his older brother. He taught himself the craft during the summers when he had time off from school, in order to help support his family. Nidal’s brother decided to leave the country for better opportunities and he left the workshop for his younger brother. Nidal dropped out of school because he had to make enough money to support his mother and sister. He was selling his products to souvenir shops who never paid him on time. Nowadays 70% of his work is sold through BFTA, Nidal was one of the first artisans we admired and started working with at the early stages of establishing BFTA. We consider him a partner whom we grew with. Nidal has managed to grow his business to include a total of 5 workers and produce a large volume of crosses per week. He prides himself on the fact that every piece leaving his shop is produced by hand without the use of copy machines. His work mainly consists of pure olive wood crosses with some mother of pearl accents. Beit Sahour
